Digital Sales
Selling Digital Products on Etsy: A Starter Guide
A practical guide to selling 3D models, tattoo stencils and digital designs on Etsy: file preparation, listing optimisation, pricing and Pinterest traffic.

The appeal of digital products is simple: you make the product once and sell it an unlimited number of times. Etsy suits that model well, because its audience is already searching for design, hobby and craft goods. This guide covers the whole process for someone starting from zero.
Which digital products sell well?
The digital categories that sell consistently on Etsy are:
- 3D printing models (STL, 3MF files)
- Tattoo stencils and template packs
- Digital art prints and poster files
- Planner and template files
- SVG cut files (for Cricut and Silhouette users)
- Font and typography packs
What they share is that the buyer downloads the file and produces something with it. Your product is an input; the buyer makes the output.
Preparing the file
There are no returns on digital goods, so quality control has to happen up front.
Checklist:
- Has someone other than you opened the file? (Test it in a different application.)
- Did you include a
READ-ME.txtinside the ZIP? - Are the licence terms written down and included?
- Are the file names understandable? (
desk-organizer-pen-cup.stl, notmodel_v3_final2.stl) - Is the bundle under Etsy's size limits?
For 3D models, add one more thing: a photograph of the model actually printed. Nothing influences the purchase decision more.
Images decide the sale
On Etsy the first image is everything. Recommendations:
- Square format, at least 2000 × 2000 pixels
- The first image should show the product in real use (a printed model, an applied tattoo, the font in context)
- The second image should list what the buyer receives (how many files, which formats)
- The third image should show dimensions or technical detail
- The last image should summarise the licence
If you use text in images, make sure it is readable at phone size, because most Etsy traffic is mobile.
Etsy SEO: titles and tags
Etsy's search matches words in titles and tags. Practical rules:
Title: Put the most important keyword first. Use the words a buyer would search for, not your internal terminology.
Weak:
Organizer Set V2 | MyBrand Original DesignStrong:Modular Desk Organizer STL | 3D Print Files | Support Free | 6 Modules
Tags: You get 13 tags, so use all 13. Prefer two or three word search phrases over single words (3d print desk organizer, not 3d print).
Description: The first two sentences appear in search results and on Google. Say clearly what the product is and what it includes. Put the file list, technical detail and licence terms further down.
Pricing
Marginal cost on a digital product is zero, so price is set entirely by perceived value. Typical ranges:
| Product type | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Single 3D model | 3 - 8 USD |
| Model set (5+ pieces) | 8 - 20 USD |
| Tattoo stencil pack | 10 - 25 USD |
| Font family | 20 - 60 USD |
Remember Etsy's listing fee (0.20 USD) and transaction commissions. On very cheap products those line items eat the margin fast.
Driving traffic with Pinterest
Etsy's internal search should not be your only traffic source. Pinterest is the most productive external channel for digital design products, because people arrive there already looking for ideas.
What works:
- Prepare vertical pin images at 2:3 (for example 1000 × 1500 pixels) for every product
- Write the search phrase into the pin title (
Support-Free 3D Printed Desk Organizer) - Use the pin description to say what the product is and who it suits
- Point the pin at your own product page, not the Etsy listing, and link out to Etsy from there
- Verify your website with Pinterest so Rich Pins are enabled and visibility improves
Point four matters. Sending traffic to your own site grows your brand and builds a presence outside Etsy. If your Etsy account ever closes, your website stays.
Why you need your own website
Marketplaces tie the customer relationship to themselves, not to you. Your own site gives you three things:
- Permanence: an address independent of platform rules
- Trust: buyers see a real brand behind the listing
- Search visibility: Google and AI search tools associate content on your own domain with your brand
At MYDigitalabs all of our products sell through Etsy, MyFonts and Google Play, but every product also has a detail page on our own site. Pinterest traffic lands there first and moves on to the sales platform from there.
Summary
- Prepare and test the product properly
- Invest in the first image
- Write titles and tags in the words buyers search for
- Price on perceived value
- Route traffic from Pinterest to your site, and from your site to the sales platform
- Build a permanent presence on your own domain
Those six steps cover most of the first year of selling digital products.
